Wires and Pipes Shouldn't Need an Extra Tile to Switch Layers#1148

Currently conveyor belts cannot have multiple connections on a single tile AND move up/down a layer. This makes sense.

Wires and pipes follow this same logic, but it doesn’t make any sense for these. I can’t really put it into words, but it makes sense from a player perspective that a pipe or wire could make an upside-down T shape and connect to the layer above it. This could allow for much more consise circuits and piping networks.

I upvote, but want to leave: I like the idea of: the fluid needs a certain radius to be efficiently pushed through the pipes, ergo the two tile requirement :)

I strongly support this! It feels so natural to push pipes into multiple directions and dimensions that I sometimes create “bugs” in my creations because the pipe gets disconnected 😅

For pipes I can kind of see the logic that you need a single piece with no joints to change layers, since it would need some pump there. But Wires should be able to connect any direction without that restriction

The points about pipes needing extra pressure makes sense, but I definitely think wires should be more freeform.

#3596 asks for T/ 90 degree angle on pipes and wires on z axis
just like x and y

#3604 wants someting similar for belts

Vertical T-Junctions please!

We have prepared the technical base a while ago for supporting this, but it’s a bigger task that we have not yet gotten to. It’s still on our radar though, but we can’t give any plans on when we’d actually get to finish this feature unfortunately.
